David Leavitt had started a breeding program in1971 to develop a healthy bulldog, which looked exactly like a bull-baiting old English bulldogs. Mr. David Leavitt was fed up with the modern bulldogs’ breeding and health problems. His aim was to produce a bulldog with the physical abilities of original bull-baiting bulldogs, but without the violent behavior of original bulldog. Mr. Leavitt used a line breeding scheme to produce the olde English buldogge, where the nucleus of the breeding scheme consisted of three unrelated adult dogs, one female and two males. The term the olde English buldogge was coined by Mr. Leavitt.

Several other recreations had been done to re-produce the original look of old English bulldogs, but they couldn’t become that popular like Olde English buldogge. Some of them are Dorset Old tyme bulldogge, Victorian bulldogge, Renascence bulldogge.

They have the temperament of modern English bulldogs which means they are not that much aggressive or violent like their ancestors. They are healthier than today’s bulldogs without having breathing problems and other ailments, which modern bulldogs suffer very frequently. They are muscular and medium sized. Its appearance indicates its capability of doing its original job of bull baiting. They possess a great strength and have athletic quality in them like their ancestors. They can run for miles without getting tired. Their head is big, but is proportionate with their body. Their muzzle is square and is having powerful jaw muscles. They can tolerate different weather conditions as they are not as susceptible as like modern bulldogs. They need not be kept in air conditioned environment all the time, but they need be protected from extreme weather conditions. Cesarean birth has been replaced by the natural one. Cesarean birth is required only when some sort of complications arises.

The olde English bulldogge is fearless and courageous. It has scary looks, but is friendly and loving with the family. They like to chew and you can provide those toys and bones for this. But, you need to channelize their energy through proper training and care. Socialization and obedience training is very important for them. They are able to adapt themselves to any lifestyle, if handled nicely.

Some breeders are working consistently on several techniques to prevent the genetic disorders in theses bulldogs. Breeders are also getting themselves educated about different genetic disorders of the bulldogs and the benefits of selective breeding.
