Hounds Dog Group - Whippet
![]() The Whippet, which looks like a Greyhound in miniature, is the fastest breed in the world: it has been timed at 8.4 seconds over a standard 1 SO yd straight course (36.52 mph). Known as the "poor man's racehorse," it became the sporting pet of miners in the north of England, where Whippet racing is still very popular. Originally, the dogs raced after live rabbits, but now artificial lures are used instead. Coat: Short, fine, and close. Color Any color or mixture of colors. Features: Long, lean head; bright, oval-shape eyes with a very alert expression; rose-shape cars; deep chest with plenty of heart-room; tapering tail; no feathering. Size: Height: dogs 18½-20 in, bitches 17½ -18½ in. Weight: 28 lb. Care: Needs plenty of exercise. Its short coat requires only a brush and rub-down; better housed indoors year round. Character: A gentle dog and good with children, it makes a fine pet and a splendidly alert watchdog.
