Terriers Dog Group - Welsh Terrier
![]() The Welsh Terrier was once popular for hunting badgers, otters, and foxes. Originally, there were two strains: a Celtic strain, using a coarse-haired Black and Tan Terrier, and an English strain, using an Airedale and a Fox Terrier cross. The English strain is said to have died out. Coat: Abundant, wiry, hard, and close. Color: Black and tan for preference; also black, grizzle, and tan; free from black penciling on toes; black below hocks most undesirable. Features: Head flat and moderately wide between ears; small, dark eyes well set in; small, V-shape cars carried forward; short, well ribbed-up body; long, muscular legs; tail well set on but not carried too gaily, customarily docked. Size: Maximum height at shoulders: 15½ in. Weight: 20-21 lb. Care: Enjoys plenty of exercise; many owners have their dog's coat clipped. Character: A fun dog, the Welsh Terrier is energetic, affectionate, and generally good with children.
