Gundogs Group - Sussex Spaniel
![]() One of the rarest of spaniels, the Sussex Spaniel has been known in southern England for 200 years. It is used mainly for partridge and pheasant, being too small to take a hare. It works in thick cover, giving tongue (barking) as it works so that its handler knows where it is. Coat:Abundant and flat, ample weather-resistant undercoat. Color: Rich golden liver, shading to golden at tips of hairs, gold predominating; dark liver or puce is undesirable. Features: Wide head, slightly rounded between the ears; fairly large, hazel-colored eyes with a soft expression; fairly large, thick ears; deep, well-developed chest; tail set on low and never carried above level of back. Size: Height at withers: 13-16 in. Weight: 35-50 lb. Care: Requires a daily brush and comb, and care must be taken that mud docs not become caked in its cars and feet. Character: A working spaniel with an excellent nose, an ideal country dog; attaches itself to one person; loyal and easy to train.
