Terriers Dog Group - Staffordshire Bull Terrier
![]() The lovable Staffordshire, or Staffy, derived from crossing an Old English Bulldog and a terrier, at a time when bull-baiting and dog fighting were popular "sports" in Britain. The resultant dogs had the ideal attributes for combat: the strength and tenacity of a bulldog coupled with the agility and quick wits of a terrier. It is not to be confused with the American Staffordshire or Pit Bull Terrier. Coat: Smooth, short, and dense. Color: Red, fawn, white, black, or blue, or any one of these colors with white; any shade of brindle, or any shade of brindlc with white. Features: Short, deep, broad skull; eyes preferably dark, but may bear some relation to the coat color; rose or half-pricked ears; close-coupled body; medium-length tail. Size: Height at shoulders: 14-16 in. Weight: dogs 28-38 lb, bitches 24-34 lb. Care: Easy to look after, requiring little other than regular brushing. Character: One of the most popular pets and a fine household dog as well as a guard, being an affectionate and game companion which adores children. However, it is not averse to having a fight with its fellows, usually emerging the victor, and so it is sensible to keep it on the leash while out walking.
