Herding Dog Group - Shetland Sheepdog

Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog, or Shcltic, originated in the Shetland islands off the north coast of Scotland where it has bred true for more than 135 years.

Coat: Outer coat of long, straight, harsh-textured hair; soft, short-haired, close undercoat.

Color: Sable, tricolor, blue merle, black and white, and black and tan.

Features: Refined head, with medium-size, almond-shape eyes, obliquely set; cars small and moderately wide at base; muscular, arched neck; back level; tail set low and tapering toward tip.

Size: Height at withers: dogs about 14½ in, bitches about 14 in.

Care: Requires daily grooming, using a stiff bristle brush and a comb; should not be kenneled outside.

Character: An excellent choice of family pet; an intelligent, faithful dog which enjoys exercise, gets on well with children, and is generally obedient.
