Non-Sporting Group - Schnauzer

The Schnauzcr or Standard Schnauzcr is the oldest of the three varieties of Schnauzer. It was originally used as an all-purpose farm dog, and was a good ratter. It is also an excellent companion.

Coat: Harsh and wiry, with a soft undercoat.

Color: Pure black (white markings on head, chest, and legs undesirable), or pepper and salt.

Features: Strong head of a good length; dark, oval-shape eyes; neat, pointed ears; chest moderately broad; tail set on and carried high, and is characteristically docked to three joints.

Size: Standard height at shoulders: dogs 18/2-19Min, bitches 17/>-18/in. Weight: around 33 lb.

Care: Enjoys plenty of exercise, and its hardy, harsh, wiry coat needs a certain amount of stripping and plucking. Pet dogs can be clipped but this will spoil the coat for showing.

Character: The Schnauzer is an attractive, robust, intelligent, and playful dog, which makes a good companion, and is generally good with children.

The Schnauzer's movement should be free, balanced, and vigorous.
