![]() The Schipperke originated in Belgium, where it was once the most popular housepet and watchdog. Traditionally its job there was to guard canal barges when they were tied up for the night, and it was this task that earned the breed its name-.. Schipperke is Flemish for "little captain." Coat: Abundant and dense, with longer hair on the neck, shoulders, chest, and backs of rear legs. Color: Black, but the undercoat can be slightly lighter. Outside the USA other solid colors arc permissible. Features: Broad head with flat skull; eyes oval, dark brown; ears moderately long: chest broad and deep; the tail is docked. Height at withers: dogs 11-1 3 in, bitches 10 12 in.Weight:12 18 lb. Care: Said to be able to walk up to 6 miles a day, but will make do with considerably less exercise; should he housed indoors rather than in a kennel. Character: The Schipperke is an affectionate dog which is good with children, usually very long lived, and an excellent watchdog.
