Hounds Dog Group - Saluki
![]() The Saluki, which dates back to 3,000 BC, may take its name from the ancient city of Saluk in the Yemen, or from the town of Seleukia in the ancient Hellenic empire in Syria. It is prized by the Bedouin people for hunting gazelle, but elsewhere in the world it is kept as a companion and show dog. It is also known as the Gazelle Hound, the Arab Gazelle Hound, the Eastern Greyhound, and the Persian Greyhound. Coat: Smooth, silky in texture. Color: White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle, silver grizzle, deer grizzle, tricolor (white, black, and tan), and variations of these colors. Features: Long, narrow head; eyes dark to hazel: long, mobile ears, not set too low; fairly broad back; strong hip bones set wide apart; tail set on low from long, gently sloping pelvis. Size: Height: 22-28 in. Weight: 44-66 lb. Care: Requires plenty of exercise; coal needs daily grooming using a brush and hound glove. Character: Elegant, if somewhat aloof. Loyal, affectionate, and trustworthy; its hunting instincts need to be controlled around livestock.
