Hounds Dog Group - Pharaoh Hound

Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh Hound has been described as the oldest domesticated dog in recorded history because it so closely resembles the dogs carved on the tomb walls of the pharaohs and on ancient Egyptian artefacts dating back to at least 2,000 BC.

Coat: Short and glossy.

Color: Tan or rich tan with white markings; white tip on tail strongly desirable; white star on chest, white on toes, and slim white blaze on center line of face permissible; flecking or white other than above undesirable.

Features: Long, lean, well-chiseled head; eyes amber, blending with coat; medium-size ears set high; lithe body with almost straight top line; tail medium set, fairly thick at base, and tapering toward tip, reaching just below point of hock in repose.

Size: Height at withers: dogs 22-25 in, bitches 21-24 in.

Care: Coat needs little attention; requires plenty of exercise and is not suited to cramped conditions.

Character: Happy and confident, it likes children, and makes a good family pet.
