![]() The origins of the Pekingese may be traced back some 1,500 years. Believed to be a close relative of the Lhasa Apso and the Shih Tzu, they were said to combine the nobility of the lion with the grace and sweetness of the marmoset. Favored by the 19th-century Chinese Imperial court, they were so prized that no commoner was allowed to own one. Coat: Long and straight, double-coated with coarse top coat, thick undercoat; profuse mane and feathered tail. Color: All colors and marking arc permissible and of equal merit, except albino or liver. Particolors should be evenly broken. Features: Wide, flat head with shortened muzzle and deep stop; flat face; prominent round eyes; feathered ears carried close to head; thick chest and neck, short body with slightly rolling gait; tail set high and curving over back. Size: Weight: dogs, not exceeding 11 lb; bitches not exceeding 12 lb. Care: Requires considerable brushing and frequent combing. Character: A thickset, dignified little dog with a mind of its own; intelligent and fearless, its ideal role is that of a pampered companion.
