![]() Probably descended from the Tibetan Mastiff, webbed feet and an oily coat allow the Newfoundland to remain in water for long periods of time. It aided fishermen and gained great fame as a life-saver, as valued in Newfoundland waters as the Saint Bernard is in the Swiss Alps. Coat: Flat, dense, and coarse-textured double coat; oily and water resistant. Outer coat moderately long, straight or slightly wavy. Color: Black, brown, gray, or Landscer (black head with black markings on a white ground). Features: Massive, broad head; small, dark brown eyes; small cars set well back; strong, broad, muscular body; thick tail. Size: Height at shoulders: dogs 28 in bitches 26 in. Weight: dogs 130-150 lb, bitches 110 120 1b. Care: Needs a fair amount of space, regular exercise on hard ground, and daily brushing using a hard brush. Character: Rarely bad tempered unless provoked. Amazingly gentle with other breeds.
