Terriers Dog Group - Lakeland Terrier
![]() The Lakeland Terrier, from the Lake District in England, was developed to protect lambs from foxes. It is thought that the Border, the Bedlington, and the Dandic Dinmont Terriers, and probably later the Fox Terrier, all contributed to the breed. The result is a practical and courageous working animal, resembling an Airedale Terrier in miniature, which is small enough to follow prey underground. Coat: Dense and harsh, with weather-resistant undercoat. Color: Black and tan, blue and tan, red, wheaten, red grizzle, liver, blue, or black; mahogany or deep tan not typical; small tips of white on feet and chest considered undesirable but permissible. Features: Flat skull; refined, dark or hazel eyes; moderately small cars; reasonably narrow chest; tail customarily docked. Size: Height at shoulders: 14½ in. Weight: dogs 17 lb, bitches 15 lb. Care: Needs a fair amount of exercise. Coat requires daily brushing. Character: Has retained its sporting instincts, yet makes an excellent houscpet and a smart yet lively guard.
