Non-Sporting Group - Keeshond

Keeshond

Like other spitz breeds, the Keeshond (pronounced "kayshond") is believed to derive from an Arctic breed. It became popular in Holland as the companion of barge-dwellers and as a watchdog.

Coat: Long and straight with the hairs standing out; a dense ruff over the neck.

Color: A mixture of gray, black, and cream; undercoat pale.

Features: Well-proportioned head that is wedge-shaped when seen from above; dark, medium-size eyes; small, triangular ears; compact body; well-feathered, high-set tail that curls tightly over the back.

Size: Height at shoulders: dogs, about 18 in, bitches 17 in. Weight: 55-66 lb.

Care: Requires daily grooming using a stiff brush, and a fair amount of exercise. A choke chain will spoil the ruff.

Character: Good natured and long-lived, the Keeshond tends to be a devoted, one-person dog.
