Terriers Dog Group - Irish Terrier
![]() The Irish claim that their national terrier is a smaller version of the Irish Wolfhound and has been in existence in Ireland for centuries. It seems more likely that it is a descendant of wire-haired Black and Tan Terriers, whose job was to repel vermin and hunt some 200 years ago. Coat: Harsh and wiry. Color: Whole-colored, preferably red, red wheaten, or yellow-red; small amount of white on chest acceptable; white on feet or any black shading highly undesirable. Features: Long head, flat and narrow between ears; small, dark, unprominent eyes; small, V-shape cars; deep, muscular tail, customarily docked. Size: Height at shoulders: 18 in. Weight: about 25-27 lb. Care: Coat should be stripped two or three times a year, and it should be groomed and brushed regularly. Character: An expert ratter and gundog, also makes an affectionate pet.
