Gundogs Group - Irish Setter
![]() The Irish Setter, or Red Setter, was developed by crossing Irish Water Spaniels, Spanish Pointers, and the English and Gordon Setters. Although it originated in Ireland, the breed came into its own in Victorian England, where its speed and energy made it ideal as a gundog working in large, open expanses of countryside. Coat: Short and fine on head, fronts of legs, and tips of cars; moderately long, free, and as straight as possible on rest of body with good feathering. Color: Rich chestnut with no trace of black; white markings on chest, throat, chin, or toes, or small star on forehead, or narrow streak or blaze on nose or face arc allowed when showing. Features: Long, lean head; dark hazel to dark brown eyes; moderate-size cars; deep chest, rather narrow in front; tail moderate in length in relation to body. Size: Height: 25-27 in. Weight: 60-70 lb. Care: Requires plenty of exercise as well as daily brushing. Character: Very good-natured and loving with boundless energy. Has particular affinity with horses, but does not make a good guard dog.
