Gundogs Group - Hungarian Vizsla
![]() The Hungarian Vizsla, or Magyar Vizsla, is the national hunting dog of Hungary. The Hungarian word vizsla means "responsive" or "alert."This smooth-haired setter was bred for the temperature extremes of the central Hungarian plain (Puszta). It is likely that the German Wcimarancr, to which it bears a strong resemblance, and Transylvanian pointing dogs played a part in its early development. There is a wire-haired form of the Vizsla, rarer than the smooth-haired variety, which is favored in its native Hungary for working in water. It was not until after the Second World War that the Vizsla became widely known. Coat: Short, dense, and straight; lightly fitting. Color: Russet gold; small white marks on chest and feet arc acccptahlc. Features: Lean, elegant head with a long muzzle; long, thin cars, set moderately low; short, level, well-muscled hack; deep chest with prominent breastbone; tail moderately thick, set low, and docked. Size: Height at withers: dogs 22½-25 in, bitches 21-24 in. Weight: 44-66 lb. Care: Needs plenty of exercise and the coat should be brushed regularly. Character: A versatile, easily trained gundog, adept at hunting, pointing, and retrieving, and bred for temperature extremes.
