Gundogs Group - Golden Retriever

According to a story the Golden Retriever originates from a troupe of eight Russian sheepdogs, performing in a circus. Whatever the truth, it is an excellent family dog with a kind, brown eye.

Coat: Flat or wavy with good feathering; dense, water-resistant undercoat.

Color: Any shade of gold or cream, but neither red nor mahogany; a few white hairs on chest arc permissible.

Features: Head balanced and well-chiseled; dark brown eyes; moderate-size ears; deep chest and well balanced body; tail set on and carried level with back.

Size: Height at withers: dogs 22-24 in, bitches 20-22 in. Weight: dogs 65-75 lb, bitches 55-65 lb.

Care: It requires regular brushing and ample exercise, and is best suited to a country environment; will adapt to suburban conditions provided that good walks and a garden are available.

Character: The Golden Retriever is an ideal sportman's companion, family pet, an excellent gundog, and gentle with children. This beautiful animal also makes a popular show dog.
