![]() The German Short-haired Pointer is of Spanish origin and was probably derived from crossing the Spanish Pointer with a scenthound, thereby producing a dog that would both point and trail. English Foxhound blood is also believed to have been added. The breed was developed in Germany about 100 years ago. Coat: Short-haired Short and Hat; coarse to the touch. Wire-haired Thick and harsh, with dense undercoat. Color: Short-haired Solid liver, liver and white spotted, liver and white spotted and ticked; liver and white ticked; the same variations with black instead of liver; not tricolor. Wire-haired Liver and white, solid liver, also black and white; solid black and tricolor undesirable in show dogs. Features: Short-haired Broad, clean-cut head, with slightly molded crown; medium-size eyes; broad ears set on high; chest should appear deep rather than wide, but in proportion to body; tail starts high and thick, growing gradually thinner toward tip. Wire-haired Broad head balanced in proportion to body; slightly rounded crown; medium-size, oval eves; cars medium-size in relation to head: chest should appear deep rather than wide but not out of proportion to rest of body; tail starts high and thick, growing gradually thinner toward tip. Size: Short-haired-height at withers: dogs 23-25 in, bitches 21-23 in. Weight: dogs 55-71 lb, bitches 44-60 lb. Wire-haired height at shoulders: dogs 24-25 in, bitches 22-24 in. Weight: dogs 55-75 lb, bitches 44-64 lb. Care: Neither breed of Pointer requires a lot of grooming. The wire-haired breed is less suitable as a household pet. Both types of dog require plenty of regular exercise and adequate space. Character: Both varieties are powerful, strong, and versatile hunting dogs, equally at home on land or in the water. Short-haired is easy to train and good with children. Wire-haired Pointer is an active, responsive dog, but it has some aggressive qualities.
