![]() The oldest and most distinctive of the four breeds of setter-which sit or "set" when they find prey- the English Setter has been known since the 14th century. Coat: Short, straight, and dense. Color: Black and white (blue bclton), orange and white (orange bclton), lemon and white (lemon bclton), liver and white (liver bclton), or tricolor (blue belton and tan or liver bclton and tan); those without heavy patches of color but flecked (bclton) all over are preferred. Features: Head lean and noble; eyes neither deep nor prominent; cars moderately low set; back short, level, and well muscled; high withers; tail set on almost in line with back, scimitar shapc but not turning upward, soft feathering. Size: Height: dogs 25-27 in, bitches 24-25 in. Weight: 40-70 lb. Care: Needs daily brushing with a stiff brush and the use of a steel comb. Character: Strikingly beautiful, loyal, and affectionate, it combines the role of family pet and sportman's dog. It is good with children, can live as one of the family or be kenneled out of doors.
