Hounds Dog Group - Deerhound

Deerhound

One of the most ancient of British breeds, the Deerhound may have arrived in Scotland with Phoenician traders about 3000 years ago, and thereafter developed its thick weather-resistant coat to combat the colder climate.

Coat: Shaggy but not overeoated.

Color: Dark blue-gray and lighter grays; brindlcs and yellows; sandy red or red-fawn with black points.

Features: Head broadest at ears, tapering toward eyes; dark eyes; cars set on high, folded back in repose; body and general formation that of a Greyhound, with larger size and bone; long tail, thick at root.

Size: Height: dogs 30-32 in, bitches 28 in. Weight: dogs 85-110 lb, bitches 75-95 lb.

Care: Needs lots of exercise but the minimum of grooming. Best kenneled out of doors.

Character: A faithful and devoted pet for tlic energetic. Gentle in the home, but can kill livestock when its hunting instincts are roused.
