Hounds Dog Group - Dachshund
![]() There are six varieties of Dachshund, which is also known as the Teckel or Badger Hound. They arc the Smooth-haired, the Long-haired, and the Wire-haired, each occurring as both Standard and Miniature. The Dachshund derives from the oldest breeds of German hunting dogs, such as the Bibarhund, and is known to have existed as long ago as the 16th century. Originally there was only one variety, the Smooth-haired Dachshund, whose wrinkled paws are a characteristic now rarely seen. The Wire-haired was produced through the introduction of Dandie Dinmont and other terrier blood, while the Long-haired was formed by introducing the German StSbcr, a gundog, to a Smooth-haired Dachshund and Spaniel cross. Coat: Smooth-haired Dense, short, and smooth. Long-haired Soft and straight, and only slightly wavy. Wire-haired Short, straight, and harsh, with a long undercoat. Color: All colors but white permissible when showing; small patch on chest permitted but not desirable; dappled dogs may include white but should be evenly marked all over. Features: Long head, conical in appearance when seen from above; medium-size eyes; cars set on high; body long and full-muscled; tail continues along line of spine but is slightly curved. Size: Height: 5-9 in. Weight: Standard 15-33 lb. Miniature 11 lb. Care: Short-haired needs only daily grooming with a hound glove and soft cloth. Wire-haired and Long-haired should be brushed and combed. Dachshunds arc prone to back problems and should not jump up to or from heights. Character: Active and devoted. Makes a good family pet and watchdog-it has a loud bark for its size.
