Gundogs Group - Clumber Spaniel
![]() The Clumber is the heaviest of the spaniels, with the Basset and the now extinct Alpine Spaniel in its ancestry. A favorite of several generations of the British royal family, the Clumber is slower than lighter-boned dogs in the field, but is nevertheless a good, steady gundog, excelling in flushing out game and as a retriever. Coat: Abundant, close, and silky. Color: Plain white body with lemon markings preferred for show dogs, though orange is allowed. Slight head markings and freckled muzzle. Features: Massive, square, medium-length head; clean, dark-amber eyes, slightly sunken; large, vine-leaf shape ears; long, heavy body close to ground; chest deep; tail set low and feathered. Size: Height at withers: dogs 19-20 in, bitches 17-19 in. Weight: dogs 70-84 lb, bitches 55-70 lb. Care: Needs a fair amount of brushing, and care must be taken that mud does not become lodged between its toes. Character: Good temperament and may be kept as a pet, but ideally it should be a working gundog.
