Toy Dogs Group - Chinese Crested Dog

Chinese Crested Dog

The almost hairless Chinese Crested is said to have originated in China and been taken to South America in Chinese sailing ships many centuries ago. It has no coat except for a flowing crest or mane, and hair on its feet and plumed tail. However, in almost every litter, there are some haired pups which grow into luxuriantly coated adults resembling little sheepdogs. These are known as Powder Puffs.

Coat: Chinese Crested Hairless: Tuft of long, soft hair only on head, feet, and tail. Chinese Crested Powder Puff: Double, long, straight outer coat, soft silky undercoat.

Color: Any color or combination.

Features: Slightly rounded head and skull; low-set erect cars; dark eyes; body may be racy and fine-boned (deer type) or heavier (cobby type); slender tapering tail set high and carried forward over the back in motion.

Size: Height: dogs 11-13 in, bitches 9-12 in. Weight: not exceeding 12 lb.

Care: Food rations should be increased in the winter months. Should be bathed about every three weeks and have its skin massaged with cream. Adjusts to warm or cold climates but should never be kenneled out of doors; must be protected against sun.

Character: An excellent pet, frequently hyperactive, playing tirelessly, and leaping about in anticipation of food.
