Gundogs Group - Bourbonnais Setter
![]() Although associated with central France, the Bourbonnais Setter seems to derive from the Pyrenees. Its ancestors gradually spread out to other regions, and crossings with local dogs produced varieties which took the name of their new home. The Bourbonnais, often described as the short-tailed setter because it is born without a tail, has a striking Dalmatian-like coat pattern on a distinctly thickset body. Coat: Short. Color: White and light brown; fawn without large markings, but having small spots fused into the white, distributed uniformly over the body. Features: Very long head with arched skull and slight stop; large, dark amber eyes, not sunken; long cars reaching to throat; broad, slightly convex back, tail very short and set low. Size: Average height: 21 in. Weight: 40-57 lb. Care: Requires a fair amount of exercise, and needs a brush and rub down every few days. Character: A good-natured sporting and family dog; easy to train.
