Hounds Dog Group - Bloodhound
![]() The Bloodhound, or Chien de Saint Hubert, is one of the oldest hound breeds. It is generally believed that the earliest ancestors of the Bloodhound were bred in Mesopotamia in 2,000-1,000 BC. The Bloodhound has the keenest sense of smell of any domestic animal. Able to follow a days-old scent, it has been used to track down lost people as well as game. Having found its quarry, this gentle animal does not kill it. Coat: Smooth, short, and weatherproof. Color: Black and tan, liver (red) and tan, or red. Features: Head narrow in proportion to length, and long in proportion to body; medium-size eyes; thin, soft ears set very low; well-sprung ribs; tail (stern) long, thick, and tapering to a point. Size: Height: dogs 25-27 in, bitches 23-25 in. Weight: dogs 90-110 lb, bitches 80-100 lb. Care: Needs adequate exercise; best suited to a rural environment. It should be groomed daily with a hound glove. Character: Good with children and exceedingly affectionate; an ideal companion for those with space and energy, and tolerant neighbors who do not object to its baying.
