![]() The Bernese Mountain Dog, named after the canton of Berne in Switzerland, has worked as herder and flock guardian, and is still used to pull milk carts up Swiss mountains. Coat: Thick, moderately long, and straight or slightly wavy, with a bright sheen. Color: Jet black, with rich, reddish brown markings on checks, over eyes, on legs and chest; some white markings. Features: Strong head with a flat skull; dark brown, almond-shape eyes; medium-size ears; compact body; bushy tail. Size: Height at withers: dogs 25-27½ in, bitches 23-26 in. Weight: about 88 lb. Care Needs regular brushing, plenty of space and exercise. Character; The Bernese Mountain Dog makes a good pet, being amiable toward children and other pets.
