Hounds Dog Group - Beagle
![]() This small hound has existed in Britain at least since the reign of King Henry VIII (1509-^17). His daughter Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603) kept numerous Beagles, some of which were so small they could be put in a pocket and so became known as Pocket Beagles (now extinct). The breed is often known as the "singing Beagle," but it is not usually noisy indoors, reserving its voice for the chase. Coat: Short, dense, and weatherproof. Color: Any recognized bound color other than liver; tip of stern, white. Features: Head fairly long and powerful without being coarse; dark brown or hazel eyes; long cars with pointed tips; top-line straight and level; sturdy tail. Size: Height: two varieties: under 13 in, and 13-15 in. Care: Short, weatherproof coat requires little attention; needs average exercise when kept as a pet. Character: Affectionate, determined, and healthy; long-lived and good with children. It makes a good family pet but is not renowned for obedience.
