Herding Dog Group - Appenzell Mountain Dog
![]() The Appenzell takes its name from a canton in northern Switzerland. Used extensively at one time as a herding dog, and to haul carts of produce to market, it is still fairly common in its native land, but is today rarely seen in other countries. Coat: Short, dense, and hard. Color: Black and tan with white markings on head, chest, and feet; the tip of the tail is always white. Features: Head flat, broadest between cars; brown, rather small eyes; fairly small cars set on high; strong, straight back; medium-length, strong tail carried curled over the back. Size: Height: dogs 22 - 23 in, bitches 18½ - 20 in. Weight: 49 - 55lb. Care: Needs plenty of food and exercise, and a daily brushing. Character: A resilient, intelligent dog that is easily trained, the adaptable Appenzell makes an excellent farm and rescue dog, companion, and guard.
